Modern Arnis is a Filipino Martial Art founded by Professor Remy A. Presas, designed to preserve traditional stick fighting while making it practical for modern self-defense. Blending weapon and empty-hand techniques, Modern Arnis emphasizes flow, adaptability, and the principle that “the stick is merely an extension of the hand.” Professor Presas shared his art worldwide, inspiring countless students who continue to carry on the Professor's legacy. Today, Modern Arnis thrives as both a cultural tradition and a living, evolving martial art that empowers practitioners with confidence, respect, and practical self-defense skills.

Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art rooted in powerful self-defense principles, using softness to overcome hardness and flow to neutralize force. Beyond its martial applications, Tai Chi’s gentle, continuous movements cultivate balance, relaxation, and overall well-being, making it both a practical art of defense and a lifelong practice for health and harmony.
At River & Cane Martial Arts, our Tai Chi curriculum follows the lineage of Yang Cheng Fu → Cheng Man Ching → T. T. Liang → Richard Roy, carrying forward the traditions of these masters while honoring their emphasis on precision, internal development, and accessibility for all practitioners.
Class/Practice Schedule as 10/1/2025
Thursday evening 5:00 to 7:00 Tai Chi

The Open Workout format provides students with an opportunity to train across both Modern Arnis and Tai Chi in a supportive, collaborative setting. Led by advanced students and/or junior instructors, these sessions can rotate between partner drills, flow exercises, and self-defense applications from Modern Arnis, and movement practice, form exploration, and relaxation from Tai Chi. This structure encourages cross-training, peer learning, and a deeper appreciation of both martial arts.

Luke is also a certified yoga instructor, meditates daily and explores shamanic studies to deepen the connection between body, mind, and spirit.

His martial arts background also includes Tang Soo Do with Master Brian White in the late 80s and workshops in Kenpo, Tae Kwon Do, and Aikido in the 90s. Phillip seeks to apply the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual lessons of martial arts to all aspects of life.

For fifty years, JR Roy Martial Arts was a cornerstone of our community — a place where generations trained, taught, and grew together. When JR Roy closed its physical doors at the end of September 2025, it marked the end of an important chapter. We are deeply grateful for that legacy.
River & Cane Martial Arts is honored to continue parts of that story. Beginning in October 2025, we opened in the very same studio on 1 Osgood Street, 2nd Floor, carrying forward two of the core arts that formed the heart of the old school: Modern Arnis and Tai Chi. Our approach preserves the practical self-defense roots of Modern Arnis while embracing the internal, health-focused practices of Tai Chi — a balance of martial skill and lifelong wellness.
We respect the teachers, students, and community who built so much here. Our intention is simple: to maintain the highest standards of safety and integrity, to teach with humility, and to provide a welcoming, cooperative space where both new students and experienced practitioners can train, teach, and grow.
Whether you’re returning to the Osgood Street studio, exploring martial arts for the first time, or looking for a place to deepen your practice, River & Cane offers structured classes, open workshops, and instructor training grounded in tradition and adapted for today. Join us — we’d be honored to train with you.
We believe the martial arts community is strongest when we are together in community and supporting each other. Below are links to other local practitioners that we have had personal and positive experiences with.
